In this course you will read and view a range of texts including short stories, poems, novels, films and speeches. You will develop your writing skills.

Course Overview

Term 1
Students will develop knowledge and skills that contribute to success in all 4 achievement standards.
Students will read a range of short texts that connect with their lives in Aotearoa New Zealand and the Pacific.
The focus of new learning is language use in context. Students will learn how language is shaped to achieve a purpose in a specific context.
They will learn how to identify and describe language features and select examples and explain the connection to the context.

Term 2
Assessment 1.1 Demonstrate understanding of how context shapes verbal language use.
The focus of this term is writing.
Students will read a range of written texts to identify effective development of ideas, language use, and structures.
Students will complete texts of their own, using feedback to become independent.
Assessment 1.2 Demonstrate ideas in writing using stylistic and written conventions.

Term 3
The focus of this term is text study.
Students will read or view an extended text exploring and responding to significant aspects such as setting, characterisation and themes.
Students will learn how to write an exam answer about their text.

Term 4
Students will combine learning from throughout the year to prepare for the exams.
Assessment 1.3 Demonstrate understanding of significant aspects of familiar texts.
Assessment 1.4 Demonstrate understanding of significant aspects of unfamiliar texts.
