11 English 

Explore a wide range of texts from short stories, novels, poems and films to posters, podcasts and blogs. Develop skills in listening and speaking, reading and writing, and viewing and presenting.

Course Overview

Term 1
Students will develop knowledge and skills that contribute to success in all 4 achievement standards.
Students will read a range of short texts that connect with their lives in Aotearoa New Zealand and the Pacific.
They will learn how to describe and respond to aspects of texts and to write their own texts, developing ideas and using language effectively.

Term 2
Assessment 1.2 Demonstrate understanding of specific aspects of studied texts.
The focus of new learning is language use in context. Students will learn how language is shaped to achieve a purpose in a specific context.
They will learn how to identify and describe language features and select examples and explain the connection to the context.
This understanding will be used to create written texts that focus on effective language use.
Assessment 1.1 Demonstrate understanding of how context shapes verbal language use.

Term 3
The focus of this term is writing.
Students will read a range of written texts to identify effective development of ideas, language use, and structures.
Students will learn how to use a prompt to begin writing.
Students will complete texts of their own, using feedback to become independent.
Assessment 1.3 Demonstrate ideas in writing using stylistic and written conventions.

Term 4
Students will combine learning from throughout the year to prepare for the exam.
Assessment 1.4 Demonstrate understanding of significant aspects of unfamiliar texts.
