13 Outdoor Education

In this course you develop  your skills in a variety of outdoor disciplines. This course would be a good introduction for those wishing to have a career in the outdoors.

Course Components

  • Develop intermediate level kayaking skills on white-water
  • Participate in a kayaking overnight camp experience
  • Develop mountain biking skills on technical terrain
  • Plan for and participate in a mountain bike camp
  • Learn and lead climb and develop technical rock-climbing skills

Course Overview

Term 1
focuses on developing whitewater kayaking skills, culminating in a three day camp at the Hurunui river

Term 2
Emphasis on improving the skills and fitness needed for mountain biking. This includes technical riding skills, as well as basic bike maintenance. Finishes with a 3 day camp in the Hanmer Springs area.

Term 3
Dedicated to rock climbing. We start learning basic techniques in indoor spaces, including bouldering gyms and indoor climbing walls. We then climb outdoors in the Port Hills and finish the term with a 3 days camp at Castle Hill.

Term 4
Aims to bring all the skills learnt during the year into an Adventurous Journey, which will be planned and organised as a class.
