13 Journalism
This course is a combination of reading, writing and visual design. You will develop your understanding of print and broadcast media by learning how to identify bias and critically assessing representation in the media. You will also develop your writing skills by learning how to engage an audience using conventions of journalism and writing a media text (eg: a feature article). Digital technology such as Photoshop and InDesign will be used to create your own media product.
Course Components
Term 1
Term 1, we will set up the course towards producing a magazine - students will each be given a production role [ie editor, sub-editor, photographer, etc], and a round [this is the subject area from which they will gather and sub-edit stories for placement in the magazine]. Students will also write a feature article for which they will earn 3 writing credits (AS91497 Write a media text to meet the requirements of a brief)
Term 2
Term 2 will see a continuation of roles and rounds and students will start gathering stories for their sub-editing credits. We will complete an essay topic on the representation of a group in NZ media (AS91492 Demonstrate understanding of the media representation of an aspect of New Zealand culture or society) for 3 credits, as well as designing the layout for their feature articles (AS91494 Produce a design for a media product that meets the requirements of a brief) for 4 credits).
Term 3
This term students will complete their rounds and roles and they will gain credits for the placement and subediting of those stories gathered for the magazine (27614 Sub-edit news stories and a feature intended for publication, 3 credits; and 27617 Lay out pages intended for publication 3 credits Internal).
Term 4
Students will gain a further 6 credits for the collective effort to produce the magazine, (AS91495 Produce a media product to meet the requirements of a brief).
