NCEA Level 2 Design, 12 credits or proven ability and competency in Photoshop.

13 Design

This course builds on the previous year’s course to extend and prepare Design students for university or higher study.

Course Components

  • Learn and apply knowledge and principles of typography
  • Develop critical thinking to improve your design work
  • Complete a portfolio

Course Overview

Term 1

Intro to course - Course overview, student accounts, distribute course materials, file management, learning key conventions. Introduction to digital studio, Photoshop basics. 2 weeks

Drawing tasks and assessment – Generating imagery, drawing tasks and developing skills in digital software. 2 weeks

3.1 Research assessment – Investigating methods and ideas from established designers and genres to inform your own practice. 6 weeks due 12th of April.

Term 2

3.2 Drawing assessment – Completing a series of drawing tasks. Generating ideas for a theme, writing a proposal. Develop a series of logos and posters related to your design brief which contribute to your portfolio. 3.2 internal assessment due end of Week 6, Term Two. 6 weeks due 7th of June.

3.1 Research – Task 4 completed and handed in. 1 week due 14th of June.

Double page spreads – Systematically develop a booklet containing cover ideas and series of Double Page Spreads which contribute to Panel Two of your portfolio. 3 weeks

Term 3

Double page spreads continued – Systematically develop a booklet containing cover ideas and series of Double Page Spreads which contribute to Panel Two of your portfolio. 3 weeks

Infographics – Complete relevant infographics for the second panel of your portfolio. 3 weeks

Panel Two completed finished end of Week Six, Term Three. Printing started for first two panels.

Personal Design outcomes – This time will be used to complete other personal design outcomes which were stated in your brief from Term Two. These will be appropriate to your design problem and will form the majority of your final panel of your portfolio. 4 weeks

Term 4
Folio and internal standard completion (14 credits) - Final folio submission due end of Week Four. Internals finished by end of Week Four. 4 weeks due 7th of November.
