Entry Requirements

Should have/currently be working towards UE literacy and 10 numeracy credits, IELTS 5.5 is required for ELL students. Adults without literacy qualifications may require an entrance test.


13 Child and Family Studies

The Individual Child: In this course you develop an appreciation and respect for young children and learn to recognise that each child is unique.

Course Overview

Term 1
What will I be expected to know and to be able to do by the end of this module. Demonstrate knowledge of mokopuna/children’s holistic development and learning in an early childhood setting. Unit Standard 10026 Version 7 Credit 6
Describe the dimensions and progressions of the development and learning of mokopuna/children from birth to school entry age.
Describe environmental factors that may influence the development and learning of a mokopuna/child in an early childhood setting.
Describe the acquisition and development of language and literacies in children.

Term 2
Analyse a nutritional issue affecting the wellbeing of New Zealand society.
Describe the influences of multinational food co operations on eating patterns.
Examine the history and trends in eating patterns in New Zealand.

Term 3
Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of ethics. Identify ethical situations and own ethical values.
Prepare and cook nutritious meals for a young child.
