Do you love to perform and play music? Are you looking for a course to enable you to be a full-time musician?

Hagley School of Music is designed for students who have a passion, ability and a strong interest in a career in music.

Hagley School of Music will enable you to fully immerse yourself in the world of music while working toward a National Certificate in Music and NCEA Levels 2 or 3.

Course Components

  • Performance and composition/songwriting
  • Develop knowledge of music theory and aural learning
  • Music technology, including recording and software
  • History of music and research topics
  • Analysis of music works
  • Opportunity to gain UE Literacy through Media Studies (for HSM Level 2)
  • Instrumental/vocal lessons and performances
  • Performance studio

Course Overview

Term 1
The focus of term 1 is music literacy.
Student will;
- learn to create instrumentation from a piano score to an ensemble
- learn to use MuseScore
- learn to use DAWs to create sequence
- learn to perform solo and group pieces
- learn to compose and record a piece of music

Compulsory Assessments:
2.8 Devise an instrumentation for an ensemble - 4 credits
2.4 Compose substantial pieces of music - 6 credits (the first composition)
US32302 Apply knowledge of MIDI sequencing - 3 credits
US32303 Apply knowledge of a music notation application - 3 credits

Potential Assessments:
2.1 Perform two substantial pieces of music as a featured soloist - 6 credits (the first performance)

Term 2
The focus of term 2 is music performance and music creation.
Student will;
- learn to investigate NZ Music
- learn to perform solo and group pieces
- learn to compose and record a piece of music

Compulsory Assessments:
2.9 Investigate an aspects of New Zealand music - 4 credits
2.4 Compose substantial pieces of music - 6 credits (the second composition)

Potential Assessments:
2.1 Perform two substantial pieces of music as a featured soloist - 6 credits (the second performance)
2.2 Perform a substantial piece of music as a featured soloist on a second instrument - 3 credits
2.3 Demonstrate ensemble skills by performing a substantial piece of music as a member of a group - 4 credits

Term 3
The focus of term 3 is music performance and musicology.
Student will;
- learn to analyse a score reading, chord function,
- learn to identify the elements of music
- learn to perform solo and group pieces
- learn to compose a piece of music
- Learn to analyse the compositional devices
- learn to discuss musicology knowledge in writing

Compulsory Assessments:
Compose substantial pieces of music - 6 credits (the second composition)

Potential Assessments:
2.1 Perform two substantial pieces of music as a featured soloist - 6 credits (the second performance)
2.2 Perform a substantial piece of music as a featured soloist on a second instrument - 3 credits
2.3 Demonstrate ensemble skills by performing a substantial piece of music as a member of a group - 4 credits

Term 4
The focus of term 4 is music performance and musicology.
Student will;
- learn to analyse a score
- learn to identify the elements of music

2.1 Perform two substantial pieces of music as a featured soloist - 6 credits (the second performance)
2.2 Perform a substantial piece of music as a featured soloist on a second instrument - 3 credits
2.3 Demonstrate ensemble skills by performing a substantial piece of music as a member of a group - 4 credits
