ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING - COMMUNITY ENGLISH

English Language Learning (ELL) 'Community English' provides you with opportunities to learn English for living, working and studying in New Zealand.

Learning English will help you develop language and skills to improve your confidence, participate in your community and prepare you for a job and/or study.

  • Practise using English in everyday situations
  •  Acquire correct pronunciation, stress and intonation

  •  Improve your conversation skills for meeting new people and visiting new places
  •  Participate in group, class and activity-based discussions
  •  Develop life skills and contribute to community activities 'Kiwi style'

Course Overview

Term 1
Students can spell high-frequency words, common sight words and apply more complex phonics rules and patterns. Students can write more complex sentences.
Students can communicate about their family and friends including describing character and looks.
Students can give personal information with clear pronunciation and can identify grammar patterns.
Students can read texts and identify common language features.
Students can carry out a conversation on a very familiar topic such as: the weekend, invitation to a movie, making a doctor’s appointment.

Term 2
Students will continue to practice speaking in everyday contexts.
Students can identify all parts of speech and what the functions of these groups of words are.
Students can write about personal topics at foundation level.
Students can read and understand words and phrases in common everyday texts, context New Zealand.
Students can compare things using conjunctions.

Term 3
Students can write about personal topics at Level 1 level.
Students can follow simple instructions.
Students can write some simple texts for practical purposes.
Students can read and understand short texts about safety.
