12 Music

This course extends the skills learned at Level 1 with a wide range of options available in performance and written music.

Course Components

  • Research and create digital music
  • Develop knowledge of music theory and aural
  • Create compositions
  • Prepare and present performances
  • Research an area of interest within the New Zealand music industry

Course Overview

Term 1
The focus of this term is music literacy.
Student will;
- learn to create instrumentation from a piano score to an ensemble
- learn to use MuseScore
- learn to perform solo and group pieces
- learn to compose and record a piece of music

Compulsory Assessments:
2.8 Devise an instrumentation for an ensemble - 4 credits
Compose substantial pieces of music - 6 credits (the first composition)

Potential Assessments:
2.1 Perform two substantial pieces of music as a featured soloist - 6 credits (the first performance)

Term 2
The focus of this term is music performance and music creation.
Student will;
- learn to investigate NZ Music
- learn to perform solo and group pieces
- learn to compose and record a piece of music

Compulsory Assessments:
2.9 Investigate an aspects of New Zealand music - 4 credits
Compose substantial pieces of music - 6 credits (the second composition)

Potential Assessments:
2.1 Perform two substantial pieces of music as a featured soloist - 6 credits (the second performance)
2.2 Perform a substantial piece of music as a featured soloist on a second instrument - 3 credits
2.3 Demonstrate ensemble skills by performing a substantial piece of music as a member of a group - 4 credits

Term 3
The focus of this term is music performance and musicology.
Student will;
- learn to analyse a score reading, chord function,
- learn to identify the elements of music
- learn to perform solo and group pieces
- learn to compose a piece of music

Compulsory Assessments:
Compose substantial pieces of music - 6 credits (the second composition)

Potential Assessments:
2.1 Perform two substantial pieces of music as a featured soloist - 6 credits (the second performance)
2.2 Perform a substantial piece of music as a featured soloist on a second instrument - 3 credits
2.3 Demonstrate ensemble skills by performing a substantial piece of music as a member of a group - 4 credits

Term 4
The focus of this term is music performance and musicology.
Student will;
- learn to analyse a score

- learn to compose a piece of music

Recommended Prior Learning

Entry Requirements:

Students must be able to play an instrument and/or sing. 

Music literacy skills can be optional.

Interview and audition as required.

Gained Level 1 or equivalent

Pathway

If student is a beginner, they need to organise an interview with Music teacher.
