12 Geography

Geography is all about learning about our natural and cultural environment both locally and globally. We look at current issues today and decisions in our future. First half of the year involves:

Aotearoa NZ environment

This course will focus on the interaction of people and environment exploring both the physical environment and the role of predators in Aotearoa. The course includes a 3 day trip to Aoraki/Mt Cook and is a highlight for many who have never been there. This is an optional trip and a donation of $200 is required. There is also the potential for those who wish to further expand their Geography skills in the latter part of the year.

The second half of the year involves

Current global issues and crime

The focus of this course is on global issues and crime. We will explore global issues such as malaria and piracy as well as urban issues such as murder rates in Chicago and urban planning. There is also the opportunity to do an exam based on geographic skills.

Course Overview

Term 1
Students will be developing a variety of skills and working on their learning around Predator 2050. They will be looking at the issue at Banks Peninsula and thinking about the differing perspectives on this and what solutions we have around predators. Students will be given booklets and information through their teams portal. Students will start this assessment in Week 7 Tuesday for two weeks.
Students will be given information on the Aoraki trip for the following term.

Term 2
Students will be learning about the South Island high country. Thinking about the differing processes that have created this unique environment and think about how Mountains and glaciers can be seen today. We will be learning about vegetation and the changes this has across the South Island. Our research will be based on the Aoraki area and a field trip is organised for Week 3 which allows students to collect data and see for themselves the differences in vegetation.
