Course Description

12 English

In this course you will read and view a variety of texts including short stories, poems, novels and  films. You will develop reading and analysis skills. You will develop your writing skills to further craft and control your writing in a range of forms.

Course Components

  • Close reading and analysis of a variety of texts
  • Craft persuasive writing, creative writing and essays
  • Develop information literacy skills

Course Overview

Term 1
All students will learn what analysis is and practise using this skill with some short texts .
Students will then apply their analysis skills to either:
A study of short fiction and non fiction texts connected by an idea
Or:
A research inquiry into an issue using a range of short non fiction texts.

Term 2
Assessment of either:
AS 91104 Analyse significant connections across texts supported by evidence (4 credits)
Or:
AS 91105 Use information literacy skills to form developed conclusions (4 credits)
Students will further develop analysis skills by viewing a film and analysing key scenes.
Students will continue to analyse language use and meaning in short texts in preparation for the exam.
Assessment of AS 91107 Analyse aspects of visual texts through close viewing, supported by evidence (3 credits)

Term 3
The focus this term is writing.
Students will read exemplars and learn how to structure ideas and use language in a piece of formal writing.
Students will learn to revise and edit writing and apply this to 2 pieces for the folio.
Continued reading and analysis in preparation for the external.
Assessment of AS91101 Produce a selection of crafted and controlled writing (6 credits)

Term 4
Final preparation for the external - 91100 Analyse significant aspects of unfamiliar written texts through close reading, supported by evidence.

Completion of 1 year of English study at Level 1 or by HOD discretion
