Intermediate/Advanced Dance

Learn and develop dance technique in a variety of styles, choreographic skills and build your performance confidence.

Course Components

  • Learn, rehearse and perform a variety of group Dances for a live audience
  • Choreograph your own solo, duet and group Dances
  • Build skills such as fitness, teamwork, motivation, commitment and creativity
  • Gain NCEA Level 1, Level 2, Level 3 Dance credits, as appropriate

Course Overview

Term 1
AS91209 (2.5) Perform a repertoire of dance (Dance 1- "Echo"), Internal, 6 credits
A repertoire of dance is a series of three or more dances of the same genre. A repertoire is able to be performed on more than one occasion.
Perform a repertoire of dance involves:
• displaying details of each dance in the series (e.g. defined hand movements, use of the breath)
• sustaining appropriate performance energy over the series of dances
• clearly communicating the underlying emotional content or concepts of each dance.
The performer should be actively involved in performance of each dance for at least one minute.
The dances may be choreographed by the teacher, a guest tutor or a student.
The dances performed for assessment may be for a solo, duet or group.
For assessment purposes, students may perform in a classroom/studio setting.
Evidence for this achievement standard is to be provided in one or more live showings of the dances. A recording of the performances can be used to confirm assessment judgements.

AS91205 (2.1) Choreograph a group dance to communicate an intention, internal, 4 credits
You will work in a group of 3 or 4 people to choreograph this dance. you will be given a theme, idea or stimuli to work with and your group will need to decide on your intention (idea). You will use choreographic devices to assist you to develop and create a dance with cohesion. Your dance needs to be between 1-2 minutes.

Term 2

A repertoire of dance is a series of three or more dances of the same genre. A repertoire is able to be performed on more than one occasion.

AS91206 (2.2) Choreograph a solo dance to communicate an intention, internal, 4 credits
This assessment activity requires you to individually choreograph a solo dance to communicate an intention based on an idea, feeling, mood, or image. Your dance must be at least 1 minute in length and you will utilise choreographic devices, structures and the elements of dance to develop and create a dance.

Term 3
AS91208 (2.4) Perform a theatre dance to communicate understanding of the dance, internal, 4 credits
A theatre dance is a dance performed for public entertainment or artistic expression. You will perform a dance choreographed for you with the class. You will be assessed individually on your ability to recall and reproduce the movement, your understanding of the style of the dance, ensemble skills (dancing with others in space) and that you apply the appropriate emotions of the dance as per the choreographic intention.

AS91211 (2.7) Provide an interpretation of a dance performance with supporting evidence, external, 4 credits
We will view a dance performance from a video, and interpret a 3-6 minute section of the overall dance. We will prepare for the written practice exam. Backing up statements with specific supporting evidence is important.

Term 4
AS91209 (2.5) Perform a repertoire of dance (Dance 3), Internal, 6 credits
A repertoire of dance is a series of three or more dances of the same genre. A repertoire is able to be performed on more than one occasion.
This is your final opportunity to gain the overall 6 credits by performing the repertoire of dances at the end of year annual dance showcase on Wednesday 23rd October.

AS91207 (2.3) Perform an ethnic or social dance to communicate understanding of the style, internal, 4 credits
If we get time in the course you will learn an ethnic or social dance of 1 minute or more. You will need to understand and apply the specific techniques and characteristics of the style or genre that you have learned.
