Jewellery Design

Do you have a passion for crafting beautiful objects? Do you love to make your own jewellery?

Then the Jewellery Design course is for you! In this foundation course you will be introduced to a range of basic skills in contemporary jewellery making and encouraged to follow your creative process and develop your own style.

A degree of creative freedom is built into the course. You work at your own pace and learn to motivate yourself to achieve your targets. By the end of the year you will have developed a portfolio of work and have the opportunity to exhibit your jewellery. The aim is for you to develop into an artist who has a strong sense of purpose, competence and an understanding of your design process and outcomes.

Course Overview

Term 1
The focus in term 1 starts with safety in the workshop. Throughout the term, we learn to measure accurately to ensure the economic use of materials. The skills covered include Piercing and drilling. sanding, filing, design transfer, shaping, and use of formulas. Texturing includes using a rolling mill, hammer texture, dremel texturing, and reticulation. Punch making, chasing, basic cabochon stone setting, and finishing. 1 achievement standards are included in this term work, they are AS91344 Design and make a cabochon ring.

Term 2
Term two will focus on cold connections and open and closed rivets. Designing and making hook, hoop, and stud earring wires and making an earring jig.
We will explore copper etching on brass and silver. You will design and make a brooch including the catch. You will learn basic chain making including making jump rings. The second assessment will be completed, AS91340 Design in context.

Term 3
Tern 3 you will learn casting using cuttlefish, delph clay, and lost wax methods. this term will include ingot and alloy making along with enameling. There are options to do metal bead making, fold forming, and Keum Boo 24ct gold.

Term 4
Term 4 is focusing on finishing pieces for the exhibition. This also includes pricing, catalog, photos, design, and printing for the poster and flyers. There is also work to be done in preparing the book ready for publishing.
