11 History

History is all about great stories and peoples’ experiences in fascinating and bizarre situations. Learn the art of being an historian through a close study of primary evidence. Complete research into the historical significance of a chosen person or event. Consider different perspectives on an event from New Zealand history. 

Potential Topics

  • early Māori Pākehā interactions before 1840: Tasman 1642, Cook 1769, The Boyd incident 1809 and Harriet shipwreck of 1834
  • a person or event of your choice: historical significance
  • the Māori Battalion at Cassino Italy 1944: different perspectives on an event

Course Overview

Term 1
This term we are studying early contact between Māori and pākehā before 1810. After background study, we will look at two events in detail, Cook's first visit to Tūranagnui in 1769, and the Boyd massacre of 1809.

Term 2
This term you will choose a person or event from history that interests you. You will then research the significance of this person/event and write a report on this.

Due end of Term Two

Term 3
This term we study the Māori Battalion at the battle of Cassino in Italy in 1944. You explore different perspectives of participants in the battle, including Māori soldiers, German soldiers, and Italian civilians returning after the battle ends. You write on these perspectives in a school-based exam.
