12 Tourism

Learn about the New Zealand tourism industry in a domestic and international context. Tourism in Aotearoa is one of the main 'exports' in Aotearoa and is back to pre-covid levels; investigate its sustainability and how many wonderful opportunities it brings as a relevant and exciting career.

Course Components

  • Examine work roles in the tourism industry
  • Consider the characteristics and needs of tourists
  • Identify New Zealand’s unique features and cultures
  • Explore the history of tourism
  • Discover popular international tourist destinations
  • Investigate environmental and social impacts of tourism
  • Visit local sites of interest in Christchurch.
  • Potential trip to Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park (appx $150)

    Extension credits available 24727 (3 credits) Describe and compare impacts of tourism on the physical environment and 24724 (4 credits) Demonstrate knowledge of the history of tourism available should an ākonga wish to pursue these.

DKO Destination NZ - Learners find out about regions within NZ and what makes them unique, and attractive to visitors.

Term 2
24728 3 Credits DKO work roles
Students learn about the huge range of careers available within the industry, and the skills, knowledge and attributes required to successfully work in Tourism.
24730 4 credits DKO business of tourism
This is about the models that tourism needs to be successful, origins and destinations, gateways and products of tourism to attract a diverse range of customers.

Term 3
24732 3 Credits Tourist characteristics and needs
We will investigate the broad range of tourists, why they travel and what each different group needs when they travel. Students can draw on their own experiences of travel for this.
24729 4 credits DKO world tourist destinations
Students are able to investigate a wide range of global attractions and activities and identify their features.
