ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING - COMMUNITY ENGLISH

English Language Learning (ELL) 'Community English' provides you with opportunities to learn English for living, working and studying in New Zealand.
Learning English will help you develop language and skills to improve your confidence, participate in your community and prepare you for a job and/or study.

Course Overview
Term 1
Students know the alphabet and can confidently name and sound out each letter, read high-frequency words, common sight words and more complex phonics rules and patterns.
Students can give personal information in an English language version of a pepeha and listen to identify detail and gist.
Getting to know you, your class and New Zealand.
Students can converse on everyday topics.
Students learn about each other’s culture and country and become confident in free conversation.
Term 2
Students are working towards recount writing and using past tense correctly. Continue to focus on accuracy in punctuation, and letter formation and placement.
Students can develop speed and accuracy in decoding words in order to aid the development of reading.
Students can follow simple instructions in preparation for their assessment.
Students are working towards detail and gist listening skills and familiarity with different types of questions in a listening.
Students can confidently identify adjectives.
Term 3
Students are able to construct simple sentences (positive, negative, question) using different subject pronouns.
Students are confident in everyday conversations and are using accurate subject and verb forms.
Students are building their grammar and vocabulary in order to understand simple written texts and construct their own short paragraphs.
Students are preparing and conducting a conversation in everyday New Zealand situations.
Students are preparing a series of short presentations on topics that are important to them.
Students are practising listening for information in short texts in familiar contexts.

ELL unit standards contribute to the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (NZCEL)and NCEA (Level 1 credits - Foundation & Level 1)Credit Information
