12 Dance
This course builds on the skills learnt in Level 1 with more emphasis on dance technique and choreography
Course Components

Course Overview
Term 1
AS91208 (2.4) Perform a theatre dance to communicate understanding of the dance, internal, 4 credits
A theatre dance is a dance performed for public entertainment or artistic expression. You will perform a dance choreographed for you with the class. You will be assessed individually on your ability to recall and reproduce the movement, your understanding of the style of the dance, ensemble skills (dancing with others in space) and that you apply the appropriate emotions of the dance as per the choreographic intention.
Term 2
AS991207 (2.3) Perform an ethnic or social dance to communicate understanding of the style. 4 credits
An ethnic dance is a dance genre or style associated with a particular culture, ethnicity, country, or tribe. Examples of ethnic dance could include poi, Samoan fa’ataupati, Korean fan dance, Highland fling, Irish jig, samba. A social dance is a dance genre or style originally or currently performed for the purpose of social interaction. Examples of social dance could include Israeli folk dance, lindy hop, ceroc, street dance, line dance, waltz, Charleston.
You will recall and reproduce the dance in accordance with the demonstration or description by demonstrating the details of the style, clarity of movement, appropriate posture, focus, accurate timing, appropriate sense of rhythm or musicality, and conveying the emotional content of the style.
Term 3
AS91205 (2.1) Choreograph a group dance to communicate an intention, internal, 4 credits
You will work in a group of 3 or 4 people to choreograph this dance. you will be given a theme, idea or stimuli to work with and your group will need to decide on your intention (idea). You will use choreographic devices to assist you to develop and create a dance with cohesion. Your dance needs to be between 1-2 minutes.
AS91206 (2.2) Choreograph a solo dance to communicate an intention, internal, 4 credits
This assessment activity requires you to individually choreograph a solo dance to communicate an intention based on an idea, feeling, mood, or image. Your dance must be at least 1 minute in length and you will utilise choreographic devices, structures and the elements of dance to develop and create a dance.
Term 4
AS91211 (2.7) Provide an interpretation of a dance performance with supporting evidence, external, 4 credits
We will view a dance performance from a video, and interpret a 3-6 minute section of the overall dance. We will prepare for the written practice exam. Backing up statements with specific supporting evidence is important.
Term 4 – Week 2 – Is the final chance to gain your credits at the NCEA Dance Show “In Motion”, Wednesday 15th October, 6pm
