Course Description

13 English

This course is for students who have strong literacy and analysis skills. Students will closely read challenging texts and develop their critical analysis skills. Students will learn how to form a thesis and use specific evidence and analysis to create fluent and coherent written texts.

Course Overview

Term 1
Students will develop knowledge and skills that contribute to success in all 4 achievement standards.
Students will learn how to read critically and apply critical literacy skills to a range of short texts.

Term 2
Students will draft and revise an essay for assessment- 3.7 respond critically to significant connections across texts, supported by evidence.

The focus of new learning this term will be on using language features to convey meaning and position a specific audience. This understanding will be used to create a written text for a specific purpose.

This draft may be used for the standard: English 3.4 Produce a selection of fluent and coherent writing which develops, sustains, and structures ideas.

Students will also learn how to take notes, paraphrase and select information to develop an informed understanding of a text.

Term 3
Students will plan, draft and submit an essay for assessment-English 3.8 Develop an informed understanding of literature and/or language using critical texts. (UE literacy: 4 reading credits)

The focus of the rest of this term is writing. Students will select their two best pieces of writing to submit for assessment-English 3.4 Produce a selection of fluent and coherent writing which develops, sustains, and structures ideas. (UE literacy: 6 writing credits)

Term 4
Students will combine learning from throughout the year to prepare for the exam.
