12 Outdoor Education
In this course you are introduced to a variety of outdoor pursuits, with a goal to develop your personal skills. This course is an excellent introduction for those wanting to take 13OEX.
Course Components
- Gain skills and confidence kayaking on moving water
- Learn how to perpare for, and participate in an overnight tramp
- Learn about weather, survival skills and topographic maps
- Complete a first aid course
- Build and sleep in a snow cave
- Gain skills and condidence rock-climbing
Course Overview
Term 1
This term is focused on kayaking. Whilst mainly practical, will also include the theory of kayaking and gaining an understanding of the safety considerations around this sport.
Term 2
Practical bushcraft skills, including fire lighting, river crossing, navigation, map reading skills and shelters. Bushcraft theory including an introduction to topographic map reading and weather, in preparation for an overnight tramp. Also includes First Aid course
Term 3
Snow craft. Subject o suitable conditions, there is an overnight snow craft trip. You will learn about moving in the mountains and building and experiencing sleeping in a snow cave, normally Craigeburn ski field. We would encourage you to sign up for the one-day school ski trip.
