Course Description

13 Photography

This is a course for advanced arts students who want a pathway to tertiary courses in the visual arts. It is a practical photography course which teaches key skills within the scope of photography.

Course Components

  • Refine the skills, techniques and methods needed to make photographs
  • Become familiar with established practices, procedures and conventions of photography practice 
  • Develop your own portfolio of work

Course Overview

Term 1
Intro to course - Course overview, student accounts, distribute course materials, file management. History of photography, learning key conventions genres and artists models. 2 weeks

Camera basics – Introduction to using your camera and basic studio lighting. Introduction to Photoshop and basic editing techniques. 2 weeks

3.1 Research Standard – Research established practice to develop your knowledge of methods and processes. This will inform your own planning for future work. 6 weeks. Due 12th of April.

Term 2
TERM TWO (10 weeks)

Proposal and planning – Choosing a theme and planning for your portfolio. 1 week

3.2 Photoshoots – Taking images for internal standard 3.2. This may take place outside of school depending on your topic. These may also contribute to your portfolio. During the next few weeks, you will be either planning, taking or editing images in order to complete your second internal assessment.

6 weeks Due 14th of June.

Panel 1 – Photographs for Panel One are generated through exploring themes and influences from your planning and internal standards. 3 weeks

Term 3
Panel 1 continued – Photographs for Panel One are generated through exploring themes and influences from your planning and internal standards. 3 weeks

3. 4 Folio - Panel 2 - Ideas for Panel Two are generated through extending and clarifying Panel One’s images and new artist models are introduced. 5 weeks

Printing of your first panel should be underway by Week Four of Term Three. The printing of Panel Two is expected by the end of Term Three.

Panel 3 – Work is created for Panel Three, regenerating, extending and resolving outcomes from Panel Two, with more artist models introduced. 2 weeks

Term 4
Panel 3 and Folio completion - Work is generated for Panel Three regenerating, extending and resolving outcomes from Panel Two. Final panel is printed by the end of Week Three. 3 weeks Due 1st of November

Internal standard completion - Internals finished by end of Week Four. 4 weeks Due 7th of November

Recommended Prior Learning

Level 2 Photography or Design or proven ability.

Enrolment upon interview
