Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Ryszard Dybka.

11 Architecture and Product Design

This course teaches the elements of Design and helps you apply your learning to create conceptual Architecture & Product forms.

Course Components

  • Learn Design element/principles extraction from influential architecture and cultural heritage.
  • Understand the tools of creativity available to apply influenced characteristics to generate new and different ideas.
  • Learn to critique your work
  • Refine form concepts using prototype modelling incorporated into your work.
  • Work on each project independently using effective presentation techniques.

Course Overview

Term 1
Introduction to DVC.
Drawing , Annotations ,research about 4 weeks

Project #1: Te Ao Māori / Pasifika influence combined with Contemporary influence.
(total 12 weeks) standard AS92000, 5 credits internal
Generate product or spatial design ideas using visual communication techniques in response to design influences.

As the title suggests we are interested in creating architecture which is recognisable as being inspired from two influences.
The first of the influences must be informed from Matauranga Māori and Te Ao Māori.
Because our final design contains two pathways of influence, and we can then add another traditional Aotearoa design influence as that evidence or the student may use modern architecture influence.
In class, the students research the inspiration seen in Maori/Pacifika culture found in its clothes, tools, weapons, Whakapapa found in Gods and Legends and much more.
From the research images the student extracts ideas which are then sketched divergently (all possibilities).
Your second pathway of influence involves the same method of research and sketching.
We then combine our best ideas from both pathways into a final sketch and we can show steps of doing so using cardboard modelling.
The modeling pictures are photographed and presented in a modelling page.
The final idea sketch and model now becomes a student shelter showing human scale and its site environment.

Expected assessment completion date for this project #1 AS1.1, is 6 May 2024 (week 2, term#2)

Term 2
Project #2: Perfume Bottle (10weeks) , 5 credits internal
AS92001 Use representation techniques to visually communicate own product design outcome

This standard is all about displaying a finished perfume bottle product (or drink bottle) in 3D. This should allow anyone looking at your work to appreciate the features and materiality (realness using light effects ) of the item. Up to five A3 pages are used to show off your ideas of the same bottle.
For example drawing a hand holding your perfume bottle. The hand then removes the perfume lid and then depresses the atomiser (perfume bottle spray mechanism). You can draw an exploded view of the part of the bottle. You should add annotations (notes).
What colour will the bottle be? what material will it be made from, how do we draw this material so it looks real? What is the final proportion size? Does it have more than one function? Is it reusable? Is it stable?
In class you are expected to watch demonstrations on how to make a finished product look realistic (surface quality, texture, colour, tone, light on it, shadows).

Expected assessment completion date for this project #2 AS1.2, is 19 August 2024 (week 5, term#3)

Term 3
Project #3 Bench/Playground facility, 5 credits EXTERNAL.
AS92002 Develop product ideas informed by the consideration of people.

Here we take an existing idea. It could be a school bench or a playground facility and we ask ourselves how can this product be further developed so that the aesthetic and functional features of the existing design, are extended beyond what they are now with the view of improving the outcome of people using it.

Due date for the submitting the work is Monday 14 October 2024 (students are required to complete work during Term3 school holidays). These dates are firm as this work will be scanned and sent to Wellington as an external.

Term 4
First week of Term 4 is the last chance to submit Project#3. Due 14th October 2024.

Students are expected to work on and catch up as required on project #1 and project #2 iif all other work is completed.

Recommended Prior Learning

Open Entry

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

Students are required to have the following DVC equipment

1. Staedtler Mars Lumograph Pencil (blue outer)
2. Staedtler Eraser
3. Fine liner 0.5mm black pen such as Mitsubishi uni
4. Copic or Kurecolour pens in blue, green, brown and grey

Pathway

These courses for 11 and 12DVC train the student in design thinking.

The careers which make much use of these skills are
Designer (product and spatial, B Des) , Architect (spatial, landscape B Arch) , Project Manager (B.E), team facilitator (quantity surveyor B.QS).
