ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING - VOCATIONAL ENGLISH

Full and Part-time Programmes available

Level: Intermediate to Upper-Intermediate

VOC3: Level 2 and 3 English Language credits

This course will enable you to develop your community language, knowledge and skills. It is an excellent preparation for actively participating in New Zealand life as well as preparing for a job or academic study.

Course Components:

  • Speak with fluency when communicating
  • Gain essential skills and strategies for using vocabulary and grammatical structures
  • Apply strategies and skills to understand and use English for a variety of real-life purposes


Course Overview

Term 1
Students can write descriptions of people using correct verb forms and connectives.
Students can read and respond to current events.
Students can listen for gist and specific information using a variety of techniques (keywords, synonyms, examples, listening around the keywords, selective listening, etc.)
Students can complete a form accurately.
Students can locate specific information in a text.
Students can engage in a sustained conversation in a known context.
Students can talk about a topic familiar to them in a structured manner for a sustained period of time.

Term 2
Students will understand the connections between purpose, audience and engagement in speaking situations.
Students will learn how to structure and write a response to a text (Written or visual).
Students will learn starters, connectives, and how to provide supporting evidence when responding to a text.
Students will learn how to write short texts for practical purposes such as solving a problem or accessing information.
Students will learn how to extract relevant information from a text written for a practical purpose.
Students will understand how to identify the purpose of a practical text.
Students will learn how to identify the main idea and supporting information in a text on a familiar topic.
Students will learn how to extract relevant information from a text written on a familiar topic.
Students can participate in a spoken interaction on a familiar topic.
Students will participate in a job interview.
Students will write suitable responses to job interview questions.
Students will fill in a form.

Term 3
Students can write practical texts around NZ safety (weather, water, etc) including instructions and procedural.
Students will understand and respond to more complex listening tasks in applied contexts.
Students will learn about language features and how to use them appropriately.
Students will learn how to identify the main idea and supporting information in a text on a familiar topic.
Students will learn how to extract relevant information from a text written on a familiar topic.
Students can participate in a spoken interaction on a familiar topic.
Students can structure and organise a problem/solution essay appropriately.
