Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Rosa Hughes-Currie, Mary Bock.

12 Chemistry

This course prepares you for Year 13 and Scholarship Chemistry. You are likely to need this course if you are considering engineering, health, veterinary or food science pathways.

Course Components

  • Revise atomic structure and its implications for bonding
  • Analyse chemical solutions for ions present
  • Understand factors which affect chemical reactions including reactions at equilibrium
  • Relate structure of everyday materials to their properties

Course Overview

Term 1
In Term 1 we will carry out qualitative analysis to identify ions in water samples. Your practical skills and your ability to interpret your observations will be assessed in an internal assessment.

Term 2
In Term 2 we will learn about chemical reactivity. This includes acid-base reactions, reversible reactions and factors that increase the rate of a reaction. We will also learn about oxidation and reduction reactions. Your ability to interpret observations of oxidation-reduction reactions and your ability to link these to balanced chemical equations will be assessed in an internal assessment.

Term 3
In Term 3 we will learn about the bonding and structure of a variety of materials and understand how chemists are able to explain the properties of these materials. We will also learn to calculate the energy changes in chemical reactions.

Term 4
In Term 4 we will revise content for our two external assessments.
