13 Tourism

Investigate the global tourism industry, considering knowledge and skills required to meet travellers’ needs in New Zealand and abroad. The course provides a good foundation for a tertiary programme as the Tourism industry booms in Aotearoa and provides an exciting, opportunity filled career pathway. 

Course Components

  • Learn about the extensive tourism industry roles and customer service
  • Gain understanding of skills, knowledge and attitudes required to work in tourism
  • Examine the finer details of communication and meeting customer needs
  • Research popular tourist sites in New Zealand and abroad
  • Visit local sites of interest in Christchurch
  • Embrace learning outside the classroom opportunities with possible (optional) overnight trips to Hanmer/Kaikoura or Queenstown (from $150)

Course Overview

Term 1
U.S. 23755 v3 Identify and self-evaluate the demands of a specific role in a tourism workplace, 3 credits, 8 March,
Students investigate in depth, one career within the tourism industry and identify and self-evaluate how good their skills knowledge and attributes would be in this role. They also investigate what causes stress in workplaces, what could be done to improve time management and ways to improve both.

Term 2
U.S. 18228 v4 Demonstrate knowledge of specific New Zealand regions as tourist destinations 8 Credits,
Students investigate regions of Aotearoa in regard to activities, events, attractions and features through the eyes of a tourism operator.
U.S. 18211 v6 Demonstrate knowledge of Australia as a tourist destination, 5 credits,
Students investigate regions of Australia in regard to activities, events, attractions and features through the eyes of a tourism operator.

Term 3
U.S. 3727 v10 Demonstrate knowledge of Pacific Island countries as visitor destinations, 5 Credits,
Students investigate holiday destinations in the Pacific Islands in regard to activities, events, attractions and features through the eyes of a tourism operator.
