13 Music

This course extends the skills learned at Level 2 with a wide range of options available in performance and written music.

Course Components

  • Research an area of interest
  • Develop knowledge of music theory and aural
  • Create compositions/songs and use digital technology
  • Prepare and present performances

Course Overview

Term 1
The focus of term 1 is music literacy.
Student will;
- learn to or re-learn to use MuseScore
- learn to use DAWs to create sequence
- learn to perform solo and group pieces
- learn to compose and record a piece of music

Compulsory Assessments:
3.7 Analyse a substantial music work - 4 credits
3.4 Communicate musical intention by composing three original pieces of music - 8 credits (the first composition)

US32305 Operate a music notation application - 4 credits

Potential Assessments:
3.1 Perform two substantial pieces of music as a featured soloist - 8 credits (the first performance)
3.2 Perform a programme of music as a featured soloist on a second instrument - 4 credits
3.3 Demonstrate ensemble skills by performing two substantial pieces of music as a member of a group - 4 credits

Term 2
The focus of term 2 is music performance and music creation.
Student will;
- learn to audiate music notation
- learn to perform solo and group pieces
- learn to compose and record a piece of music
- learn to research and discuss musicology

Compulsory Assessments:
3.10 Research a music a music topic - 4 credits
3.4 Communicate musical intention by composing three original pieces of music - 8 credits (the second composition)

Potential Assessments:
3.1 Perform two substantial pieces of music as a featured soloist - 8 credits (the second performance)
3.2 Perform a programme of music as a featured soloist on a second instrument - 4 credits
3.3 Demonstrate ensemble skills by performing two substantial pieces of music as a member of a group - 4 credits

Term 3
The focus of term 3 is music performance and musicology.
Student will;
- learn to analyse a score reading, chord function,
- learn to identify the elements of music
- learn to perform solo and group pieces
- learn to compose a piece of music
- Learn to analyse the compositional devices

Compulsory Assessments:
3.4 Communicate musical intention by composing three original pieces of music - 8 credits (the third composition)
US32374 Develop a sound design for a given work in an entertainment and event context - 5 credits (internal assessment)
US 32375 Realise the sound design for a given work in an entertainment and event context - 4 credits

The focus of term 4 is music performance and musicology.
Student will;

- learn to identify the elements of music
- learn to perform solo and group pieces
- learn to revise for external exams

Potential Assessments:

91421 Demonstrate understanding of harmonic and tonal conventions in a range of music of music scores - 4 credits
91423 Examine the influence of context on a substantial music work - 4 credits
