13 Calculus (13MAC)

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Angela Brett.

13 Calculus

This course is excellent preparation for university study in several areas such as Maths, Physics or Engineering.

Course Components

  • Use differentiation and integration to solve problems
  • Work with equations describing curves
  • Develop equations in trigonometry and conic sections
  • Expand your algebraic skills to include imaginary numbers

Course Overview

Term 1
Algebra revision from Level 2.
Work for external AS 3.6 Differentiation - learning to use Calculus and algebra to model situations involving change.

Term 2
Complete AS 3.3 Trigonometric Methods - use trig functions to model periodic phenomenon like tides.
Work for external AS 3.7 Integration - learning to use Calculus and algebra to find areas under curves

Term 3
Student choice of either the third Calculus Domain external (AS 3.5 Complex Numbers - exploring algebra involving the square root of negative numbers) or completing 2 extra internal exams in order to make it easier for students to complete the 14 credits needed for UE maths (AS 3.2 Linear Programming and AS 3.15 Simultaneous Equations, each 3 credits)

Term 4
Revision for externals.

Some students may attempt the internal AS 3.1 Conic Sections if it something that would be useful to them in their future mathematics career.
