12 Photography

This is a practical course for art students to develop the skills and techniques needed to make photographs, and to develop skills to think analytically and make a body of photographic work.

Course Components

  • Become familiar with the forms that photography can take
  • Develop the use of photographic conventions as a central means to make photographs
  • Develop a systematic approach to photography
  • Develop your own portfolio of work

Course Overview

Term 1

Intro to course - Course overview, student accounts, distribute course materials, file management. History of photography, learning key conventions genres and artists models. 2 weeks

Camera basics – Introduction to using your camera and basic studio lighting. Introduction to Photoshop and basic editing techniques. 3 weeks

2.1 Research Standard – Research established practice to develop your knowledge of methods and processes. This will inform your own planning for future work. 6 weeks. Due 12th of April

Term 2

Proposal and planning – Choosing a theme and planning for your portfolio. 1 week

2.2 Assessment/Photoshoots – Taking images for internal standard 2.2 these may take place outside of school depending on your topic. These may also contribute to your portfolio. During the next few weeks, you will be either planning, taking or editing images. 6 weeks. Due 14th of June

2.4 Portfolio Panel 2 – Ideas for Panel two are generated through extending and clarifying Panel One’s images and new artist models are introduced. 3 weeks

Term 3

Panel 2 - Ideas for Panel two are generated through extending and clarifying Panel One’s images and new artist models are introduced. 8 weeks

Printing of your first panel should be underway by the middle of Term Three.

2.4 Finalising folio – Your final panel should be printed and stuck down in the last two weeks of term ready for assessment. 2 weeks Due 27th of September

Term 4
Finishing Assessments – This time can be used for finishing outstanding internal assessments.

Folio final date Due 25th of October.
